Incorporating candles add a new twist on the style. The tradition of dancing with a candle in the palm of each hand comes from a Turkish folk dance where the arms are moved in different positions in time to the music. Today most U. S. dancers use candles to show off their balancing abilities or to set a Pharaonic mood to their performance.

Bamboo Cane (try belly dance prop online stores or Party City around August) and black and silver costuming.

Description:

The Saiidi is an exciting Egyptian folkoric dance performed with a cane. The dance has its roots on El Saiid or upper Egypt, in the south of the country. Originally the men's dance that prepared them to fight with warring tribes, the Saiidi was also often displayed at times of folkoric festivity. The dance required martial art like concentration and skill to weild the long, heavy staffs called 'taktib'.  Saiidi steps match the stealthy rhythm - reeling back and lunging forward with a sprightly hop. The Saiidi rhythm has a dom-tak in the first part of the rhythm, which suits a front step and the the back foot comes up in a hopping action. The second part of the rhythm is heavier with two doms - it sounds like dom-dom tak. This creates the step back and next hop.  The hopping gestures mimick the gallant steps of the Arabian stallions - the horses the Saiidi warriors would ride into battle. Nowdays, women dance the Raks Al Assaya - a feminised version of the cane dance. It is earthy yet sprightly and like the taktib, also requires skill and dexterity with the smaller bamboo cane.

The Melaya (modesty wrap) is wrapped tightly around the woman's body covering her midriff and legs, in the dance, they remove it and re-wrap it several times throughout the dance. Under the Melaya the women wear short brightly colored and fitted dresses with lots of sequins and ruffles for stage.  In the hair the women wear a headscarf with little pompom's or flowers framing the forehead. STUDIO RULES

I know, I know....rules? Why rules?

A lot of hard work, dedication, time and costs go into operating a studio. Not to mention, too much estrogen packed into one room can cause a hormonal explosion! Here are a few rules based on respect to me and to your fellow dancers! Thanks for your cooperation!

* No refunds of any kind.

* There will be a $25 processing fee added to all returned checks.

* No "observers" are permitted to view or sit in on beginner's class if you are not signed up for that class. Class space is limited and this can cause distractions and makes new dancers feel uncomfortable while they are in learning process.

The waiting room is for students arriving a few minutes before their class session starts, and will not be used as a lounge area for kids, parents, etc while classes are being held. Please make arrangements so this will not be an issue.

* I respect your privacy.  I do not give personal information such as email address or phone numbers of other students, so please don't ask.

*If you get to class early while another class is still in session, please go to the extra room and wait for your class time to start.
